Inequalities in the context of the pandemic II

In presenting the report, Nora Goren, Director of the Institute of Social Studies in Contexts of Inequality at the National University of José C. Paz, Argentina, explains that “COVID-19 has spread very rapidly throughout the world. In Argentina, more than three months after the national and provincial governments decreed mandatory social isolation measures, which led to countless regulations and actions aimed at responding to this radical change in the economic, political, and social landscape, we can observe that, while the virus does not discriminate in its contagion, social conditions do discriminate.”

Access to and quality of health systems, working conditions, access to safe water, protection systems, educational levels, access to technology, the burden of care, and overcrowding in poor neighborhoods increase the level of exposure to contagion, the limitations to protect oneself, and the conditions of possibility for the development of daily life.

Given this situation, which is becoming more complex over time and giving rise to diverse institutional and organizational frameworks and responses, researchers from the Institute of Social Studies in Contexts of Inequalities, IESCODE, of the National University of José C. Paz, came together to prepare a second document to reflect on how the political, social and economic framework is affected by this situation and the complexities it is adopting in order to contribute to a transition towards a post-pandemic 'normality' with greater social justice.

The reflections, for the most part, are situated in the province of Buenos Aires, a privileged space for our research, between mid-April and mid-June.”
