Challenges for a sovereign and inclusive development model in Latin America

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), together with the Metropolitan University for Education and Work (UMET) and the Future Institute – Marco Aurelio García (IMAG) of Argentina, present the awards for the essay contest “Challenges for a sovereign and inclusive development model in Latin America”.

Participants: Karina Batthyany, Executive Secretary of CLACSO; Cecilia Cross, Rector of UMET; Diego Pando and Consuelo Silva, members of the Expert Evaluation Committee; Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research at CLACSO; Teresa Arteaga, Research Assistant at CLACSO.

The two winning essays were presented:

-Cuba: The Territorial Dimension in the Design of a Sovereign and Inclusive Development Model. Faustino Cobarrubia Gómez

-The Casas Vivas program focuses on adolescents with extreme social vulnerability and drug abuse. Irene Dobarrio Machado Ciccarino, Diana Jenifer Ribeiro de Almeida and Allan Borges Nogueira

During her remarks, Karina Batthyány emphasized that “this competition has an objective that we at CLACSO consider central, an objective, of course, shared with UMET and also with the Marco Aurelio García Institute: to promote knowledge production and debate on the transformations necessary for strengthening and promoting public policies. Not just any public policy, but inclusive and autonomous public policies in Latin America and the Caribbean. This has been around for over a year and a half, but if we look at it in light of current events, it has become even more relevant in terms of strengthening the public sphere, the commons, and what has proven to be the response to the crisis and the answer to the future in this pandemic situation. Because we are convinced that it is precisely from the public sphere, from the strengthening of social states, from the reinforcement of values ​​such as democracy, solidarity, sovereignty, and the very clear interdependence that all the countries of our region share, that we will be able to move forward in this situation we are facing today. These essays that you have written and that we are recognizing today are a "This contribution to the agenda we need in Latin America and the Caribbean."
