Challenges of the Global South as seen from Latin America and the Caribbean

The BRICS was formed as an economic and trade association of five emerging economies with significant development potential, constituting an alternative to the G7 (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States). Initially created as BRIC in 2001 with Brazil, Russia, India, and China, it expanded to BRICS in 2010 with the addition of South Africa and, over time, added more nations, forming BRICS+. With its current composition, the group represents 39% of the global economy and half of the world's population.

During the 17th BRICS+ Leaders Summit, held on July 6 in Brazil, the member countries of the bloc released the “Rio de Janeiro Charter”, a document that reaffirms their commitment to the fight against discrimination, in favor of the promotion of human rights and inclusion in all areas of society.
