The Department of Sociology at the University of the Republic (Uruguay) traces its origins back to the creation of the Institute of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Law in 1958. This occurred within a context of modernization and increased participation at the University of the Republic (UDELAR), under a new legal framework that established co-governance and consolidated university autonomy. The founding period spans the 60s until 1973, when the military dictatorship intervened in the university, leading to the exile of intellectuals and the closure of sociological research and teaching spaces at UDELAR. This initial period was highly productive for the development of Uruguayan sociology, closely linked to and aligned with Latin American sociology and social sciences. The Department became one of the founding members of CLACSO (Latin American Confederation of Sociological Research) and hosted congresses of several Latin American sociological associations (ALAS, ALAST, ALASRU). Then, with the redemocratization of the country starting in 1985, a new stage of institutionalization began, culminating in the creation of the Department of Sociology as an academic unit with the founding of the Faculty of Social Sciences in 1990.
From that moment on, the Department of Sociology developed as an academic unit dedicated to teaching, research and outreach in sociology, and is the center responsible for training around 90% of the country's sociologists.
At the undergraduate level, it offers a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, and at the postgraduate level, it offers several programs, thematic specialization diplomas, three master's degrees – in sociology, in contemporary Latin American studies, and in sociology and research methods – as well as a doctoral program in sociology.
In the field of social research, it has around 15 areas or research groups that address different topics of study.
It has two long-standing publication collections. First, the Journal of Social Sciences, indexed in international catalogs, has been published annually since 1986 and has 48 issues. Second, since 2002, it has published an annual book entitled "Uruguay from a Sociological Perspective," which compiles the department's research findings and currently comprises 17 volumes. These publications are available in open access print and digital formats.
It also carries out university extension activities, assistance and advisory and research agreements with various public and private organizations, and civil society associations on topics of social interest.
It had a single-person management until 2018, when it became a collegiate management.
