Department of Social Sciences, National University of Avellaneda – Argentina

Clara Schor-Landman, Director

The Department of Social Sciences of the National University of Avellaneda (UNDAV) emerged from the first statutory reform of the university and was established around 2016 to group the careers of Journalism (Bachelor's Degree and Curriculum Complementary Cycle), Law and Technical Degree in Politics, Management and Communication.

Previously, the Journalism and technical degrees were part of the initial offering of UNDAV through the now dissolved Transversal Department of Communication Technologies.

The process of establishing the governing bodies of UNDAV allowed for the normalization of all its academic units. Thus, in 2016, Daniel Escribano was elected to serve as Dean, a decision unanimously supported by the members of the Departmental Council of Social Sciences.

Since then, the Department's management has been working steadily to fulfill its educational function and bases its actions on the principles detailed in Article 3 of the UNDAV Statute:

"The National University of Avellaneda conceives of education as a universal human right, as a social public good, as an inalienable duty and a priority policy of the State. This principle is based on the conviction that access to, production of and democratization of knowledge is a social, collective and strategic good, essential to guarantee the basic human rights indispensable for the good life of our people, the construction of full citizenship, social emancipation and solidarity-based regional integration." (Art. 3).

The work of its Departmental Council - made up of representatives democratically elected by all faculty - allowed for the renewal of its study plans and the adoption of flexible systems to promote student mobility and integration with other universities in the country and the world.

Likewise, the curricularization of university extension through the different levels of the subject Community Social Work enables the integration of training processes with the social dynamics that take place in community institutions, so that training is not only disciplinary but comprehensive and with a social commitment that already constitutes an identity mark of UNDAV.

The profile of its degree programs is also focused on redefining the traditions of disciplinary and professional fields. Throughout its offerings, the Department proposes curricula that reflect an era in which the State must intervene to correct the profound inequalities that society suffers in access to tangible and intangible goods and services.

Thus, Professional Practices are curricular spaces that link students to the world of work, but at the same time articulate dialogues between the university and the fields of performance, in order to avoid a dissociation or the construction of an endogamy that isolates us from the world we intend to transform.

In recent years, our first students have graduated, and we hope to have contributed to society by providing them with professionals who are both committed and competent. Above all, we hope they will never lose their connection with the university and will continue to contribute to the development of postgraduate studies and all possible collaborations.
