Public Statement
Academics from the Social Sciences and Humanities of the Valparaíso Region and International Academic Networks
Given the current political situation in Chile, and in conjunction with previous statements from various national and regional academic bodies, this group of academics from the social sciences and humanities of the Valparaíso Region declares:
We express our support for, and understand our role as academics in the social sciences and humanities, the fundamental demands expressed by Chilean society in the streets. These demands stem from the persistence and deepening of structural inequalities, as well as the urgent need to restructure Chile's institutions, granting them a legitimate and sovereign origin founded on humanitarian, just, public, and sustainable principles. We demand profound structural changes and public policies with a rights-based approach, grounded in collectivization and the strengthening of social bonds.
– We express our dismay at the massive reports and evidence, both formalized and unformalized, of serious human rights violations by armed agents of the State, replicating criminal practices and patterns of crimes against humanity that we believed were eradicated forever in Chile, and whose investigation, trial and conviction must be pursued in national and international courts and tribunals.
– We express our condemnation of the militarization of the country, and the situations and circumstances that have generated fear in the population and selective destruction of its cities, which must be investigated rigorously and transparently.
– We express our enormous concern for the safety of all the inhabitants of Chile and especially for the physical and psychological well-being of our students and their families, and we reaffirm our academic and pedagogical commitment to them, and to the reconstitution of our educational and social communities.
