Declaration in solidarity with the Cuban people and their Revolution

El CLACSO Working Group Crisis and World Economy expresses its solidarity with the revolutionary Cuban people who are facing a new attempt at interference and destabilization by imperialism.

The blockade imposed by the US for over 60 years, which consists of economic, financial, commercial, and energy persecution, has been dramatically aggravated by the pandemic. In this context, the people suffer from shortages of food and medicine in general, although not from shortages of medicine to treat COVID-19. This is because Cuba is making progress with the mass inoculation of its population with domestically produced vaccines—the only country in Latin America with its own vaccines! However, this has not prevented a resurgence of infections, as is happening in much of Europe and the US itself.

In this context, legitimate demands have been made by the population. However, these demands are being exploited by counter-revolutionary forces that have historically waged a campaign of defamation, interference, and general destabilization.

Ironically, the perpetrators of the blockade are clamoring in the international press for “humanitarian aid for Cuba in the face of the health catastrophe,” trying to spread the idea that “Cuba refuses aid and that people are dying.” They are even calling for foreign intervention under the pretext of creating a humanitarian corridor. This is a direct attack on Cuban sovereignty.

Despite all the difficulties caused by the blockade, Cuba has demonstrated solidarity and internationalism with other nations. It has sent humanitarian aid to other countries with its Henry Reeve Medical Brigade, including to a G7 country like Italy. Therefore, the only humanitarian aid Cuba needs is the immediate lifting of the economic blockade.

We stand in solidarity with the heroic revolutionary struggle of the brotherly people of Cuba, for their sovereignty and for socialism.
