Statement commemorating International Workers' Day – May 1, 2021
On the occasion of International Workers' Day, we salute all workers in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the current situation marked by a prolonged and uncertain pandemic, women and diverse people have been the most affected by this dramatic and uncertain situation, which, among many other individual and collective effects, is expressed in the loss of jobs and/or the precariousness of their conditions, which further deepens the persistent gender inequalities and accentuates poverty.
It is precisely in this scenario of uncertainty that women and diverse people in informal sectors, domestic workers and care workers in both the public and private spheres, are forced to expose themselves to Sar-covid2 because otherwise they do not receive economic remuneration or are fired, which increases their risk and their survival.
Finally, we express our solidarity with the Colombian people who, since April 28, 2021, have been carrying out mobilization processes in different cities of the country in response to an inconvenient tax reform proposal, wrongly called the "Sustainable Solidarity Law," which, in addition to being regressive, favors the financial system and large rentiers to the detriment of the middle and working classes.
At this time we advocate for dialogue, for respect for the mobilization and for the non-use of weapons against social protest in Colombia, which has already claimed seven lives, 31 people disappeared and 45 human rights defenders attacked, according to figures from Human Rights International.
