Statement condemning the attack against the life of Dr. Sara Yaneth Fernández Moreno
CONDEMNS THE ATTACK ON THE LIFE OF DR. SARA YANETH FERNÁNDEZ MORENO, PROFESSOR AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ANTIOQUIA, AND MEMBER OF OUR CLACSO WORKING GROUP IN 2016-2019
On behalf of the members of CLACSO Working Group on Borders, Regionalization and GlobalizationWe, the coordinators of this organization, denounce and condemn the attack carried out by a subject in the service of power in the early morning of March 4, 2020, against Dr. Sara Yaneth Fernández Moreno, professor at the University of Antioquia, union member and social activist in the city of Medellín, Colombia.
This attack adds to many others that social activists across the continent, and particularly in Latin America, are receiving from government agents (open or covert, such as paramilitaries and hitmen), transnational business sectors, and right-wing forces, including neo-fascist ones, that have assumed political power or are behind it in countries like the United States, Brazil, Colombia, and others.
The neoliberal policies that these governments continue to implement, not only in economic sectors where extractivism is promoted as a mechanism for “development” for the people, but also in the education, culture, and health sectors, benefit transnational capital, which continues to reap the lion's share of the profits from accumulation, to the detriment of the majority of our countries' populations. Fed up with these neoliberal policies implemented in the Americas, and indeed throughout the world, and more violently by right-wing governments, the people have mobilized against these measures and continue to do so despite repression and military coups, primarily in Latin America.
We consider the attack on Dr. Sara Yaneth Fernández Moreno worrying and reiterate our condemnation and repudiation of it, reaffirming at the same time our support and commitment always in favor of the popular and workers' movements of Colombia and other countries, which fight for a true participatory democracy and the well-being of the working and popular sectors of those nations.
