Statement against President Donald J. Trump's recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara

On November 13, hostilities between Morocco and the Polisario Front resumed, motivated by the repeated violations by the Moroccan State of the peace agreements that ended the war in Western Sahara in 1991.

In this context of tension in the region, on December 10, the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, signed a proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

This proclamation legitimizes the invasion of Sahrawi territories and the illegal exploitation of their natural resources by the Moroccan state. In doing so, it openly disregards the United Nations resolutions on Western Sahara, which recognize the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. By denying this right and supporting the Moroccan position, President Trump's statements constitute a further obstacle to achieving a political solution to the conflict.

For all these reasons, we express our rejection of the proclamation made by President Donald J. Trump and urge the administration of President-elect John R. Biden to dismiss this pronouncement and collaborate in the search for a political solution that leads to the exercise of self-determination by the Sahrawi people.
