Statement on the situation in Haiti

Statement on the situation in Haiti

El CLACSO Working Group Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean regrets the assassination of Jovenel Moïse and the consequences that this type of act brings in terms of political and democratic stability for Haiti and the region.

The economic, political and social crisis that the Haitian people are experiencing, exacerbated in recent years by domestic problems of governance and corruption, and aggravated by the complicity of foreign actors, cannot be resolved through the use of violence.

It is important to have a transition period that allows for a return to constitutional legality, which has been betrayed during the last two years. The destruction of institutions is responsible for the current confusion surrounding the dissolution of Parliament and the attacks by the government against the Supreme Court.

A consensus-building process involving social and political sectors is urgently needed. This process must also respect the country's sovereignty, as a military occupation would only exacerbate the crisis without fostering a political solution that could lead to a viable and lasting resolution.

We condemn the use of methods of terror that affect, above all, the poorest Haitian men and women, and we stand in solidarity with our brotherly Haitian people in this time of uncertainty.
