Dancing in the Mists: Gender and Youth in an Unequal Environment
POLICIES MUST NOT FORGET THE YOUNG WOMEN OF THE REGION
On March 7, UNESCO, El Colegio de México and CLACSO presented the report “Dancing in the Mists. Gender and Youth in Unequal Environments in Latin America and the Caribbean” in a digital event that was broadcast through the Facebook and YouTube channels of the three institutions.
The event was attended by the Secretary of Social Integration of the Mayor's Office of Bogotá, Margarita Barraquer; the Director General of Social Sciences and Humanities of UNESCO, Gabriela Ramos; the President of El Colegio de México, Silvia Elena Giorgulim; and the Executive Secretary of CLACSO, Karina Batthyány.
The report shows that the great inequalities in Latin America and the Caribbean, exacerbated by the pandemic, condemn young and more vulnerable women to continue perpetuating poverty, their status as victims of gender violence and sexual abuse from childhood, or to suffer more severely from phenomena such as migration and climate change.
This is reflected in the report Dancing in the Mists, which offers new evidence on gender inequalities among young people in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as resources to understand their interconnections and public policy proposals to overcome them.
“Dancing in the Mists” is not merely a report on gender and youth within the context of inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean. “Dancing in the Mists” aspires to be a platform for action, inspiring alternatives and hoping to achieve lasting transformations toward justice and equity in the region.
This project explores various avenues, serving as reminders, stimuli, and inspirational pieces for change: data engages in dialogue with life stories, and these narratives are transformed into audiovisual animations; each chapter, each report, bears the hallmark of our region's music; the illustrations are posters and postcards that keep the call to action alive; social sciences and art are combined on a digital platform, freely and universally accessible. The research and its stories become podcasts for awareness and visibility. Everything is interconnected, just like inequalities, but with a sense of overcoming challenges, collective action, and resilience.
