Open Science Training Courses for the adoption of Open Research and Open Data practices they are free and are aimed exclusively at undergraduate and postgraduate students, academics/researchers, institutional management professionals, libraries and authorities belonging to the University of Antofagasta.

Promoting open science in specific institutional settings is a complex yet unavoidable challenge given the rapid and recent transformations in knowledge production and dissemination. Driving scientific practices toward greater openness requires targeted and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders in Latin American universities. Broadly speaking, the principles of open science include open access, open research data, open peer review, and open science policies, which are complemented by more concrete components such as open research practices, reproducible research, open source software, and open licenses. Given its situated nature, there is no single way to implement open science processes; however, the aforementioned principles aim to build more inclusive approaches and experiences of science within development contexts. 

In 2021, UNESCO's recommendation on Open Science mobilized diverse stakeholders not only to agree on a definition of open science but also to reach consensus and promote the implementation of policies and practices surrounding its main components. These guidelines drive changes in traditional ways of conducting and communicating research, requiring a new approach to research evaluation to align it with the principles of open science and, in particular, to value the wide range of missions involved in knowledge production, which take on different forms of creation and communication.

From Latin America and the Caribbean, the approach to knowledge as a public good and to open access managed by the academic community as a common good, on a non-profit basis, stands out. This is complemented by a perspective that emphasizes the design of open science policies situated within the region's specific challenges, contextualized not only within the guidelines of global research and science policy agendas, but also within the emerging needs of local research and development agendas. In this context, this International Course aims to connect both the debates surrounding open science and those on responsible academic evaluation, in order to promote diverse policy instruments and practices within the region's universities that foster openness, collaboration, and participation in the production and dissemination of knowledge. 

  • To introduce, deepen and update the most recent international and regional debates on open science and in dialogue with trends in responsible academic evaluation.
  • To present an introductory range of guidelines, tools and experiences that benefit the strengthening of capacities in open access and open research data by the academic community of the University. 
  • Develop a participatory online workshop with the various actors and actresses of the academic community where perspectives, challenges and learnings about open access and open research data are debated and exchanged.

    The present project proposes 3 Training Courses:

    Aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Antofagasta

    Synthesis: This course introduces students and early-career researchers to one of the main components of open science: open access to publications and research results. It presents a range of initiatives and practices related to scientific communication, the social mobilization of knowledge, and open academic communication through open infrastructures. 

    Contents:

    • 1 class Open science: background, evolution and components
    • 2 class Scientific communication and knowledge mobilization
    • 3 class Institutional repositories: allies of Open Science and responsible evaluation of research
    • 4 class Workshop: How to publish in open access? Mapping platforms, databases and tools 

    Aimed at researchers/academics from the University of Antofagasta

    Synthesis: The course outlines a conceptual map and provides an overview of regional trends in open science. It focuses on the dilemmas, potential, and challenges of open access for university researchers and introduces a set of tools related to open research data through open infrastructures as a means to increase scientific collaboration.

    • 3 class Open research data from open infrastructures 
    • 4 class Workshop: How and why open data and research processes?

    Aimed at professionals in institutional management, libraries and authorities belonging to the University of Antofagasta

    Synthesis: This course synthesizes the main trends in recent guidelines, policies, and instruments related to open science. It engages with those who design and implement two components at the institutional level: open access policies for publications and research results, and open access research data. It provides tools to stimulate and strengthen these components of open science through reforms in the evaluation processes for academic programs and research.

    • 3 class Incentives for open science from academic and research evaluation
    • 4 class Instruments for the design of an institutional policy for open access and open research data
