Short course: Capital, war and power in a multipolar world

This course proposes an analysis of contemporary transformations in capitalism and power relations within a context marked by war, the crisis of the international order, and the emergence of an increasingly multipolar world. From a critical perspective, it will address the relationships between capital, power, imperialism, and war, considering both global transformations and their specific effects in Latin America.

Over four classes, the course will begin with an analysis of the current reconfiguration of relations between capital and power within a context of increasing geopolitical conflict. It will then examine the notion of a global regime of war, seeking to understand the new forms imperialism is taking and its limitations in the contemporary landscape. A third class will be dedicated to Latin America and, in particular, to the reconfiguration of the Monroe Doctrine under the Trump administration, discussing the disputes surrounding the so-called “Western Hemisphere” and the new forms of regional intervention and subordination. Finally, the course will explore the possibilities for resistance and transformation, examining the need to build new forms of liberation internationalism in the face of the expansion of war and the new configurations of global power.

The journey thus seeks to combine the analysis of the current situation with conceptual tools to understand the transformations of the present and, at the same time, open questions about the political possibilities of collective action beyond national borders.
