Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean

In 2010, the CLACSO Working Group Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater CaribbeanIts objective is to distinguish, within the broad universe of the American region, the Greater Caribbean region as a substantive space for reflection and action.

The Working Group proposes a research approach focused on discussing the challenges and opportunities for Caribbean territories to advance along the path of sustainable development with inclusion and social justice. It begins by recognizing the specific obstacles to development faced by most Caribbean territories classified as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as well as by all the countries that make up the Greater Caribbean region, which all share coastlines and the valuable resource of the Caribbean Sea.

The Working Group's purpose since its inception has been to strengthen collaboration and networking among its member researchers in order to develop innovative and original analyses of the Greater Caribbean reality. The Working Group has approximately 40 researchers. The majority of its members are from Cuba, with additional researchers residing in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Guyana, and Venezuela.

The Working Group intends to continue its efforts to unite researchers and activists interested in the Caribbean in joint activities aimed at the region's advancement, which is threatened by diverse external dangers and long-standing internal problems.
