Raising Empires
This book, a new volume in the CLACSO-CALAS collection, is an ethnography conducted over more than six years, which develops a strong critique of contemporary child-rearing practices among Latin American elites that, intentionally or not, consolidate inequality and social hierarchies at the national and global levels. Privileges and social and racial inequalities are justified in terms of “good parenting”; ideological struggles against “corruption” and “crisis” acquire moral legitimacy “in the name of (some) children”; “austerity,” as an imperative not only nationally but also personally and within the household, is promoted as an aspirational identity.
