Call for essays: Emerging Agendas

 Call for essays: Emerging Agendas

Open convocatory

The production of Latin American and Caribbean academic knowledge and critical thought in the social sciences and humanities depends not only on the long history that underpins its rich tradition, but also requires, as an essential condition for its existence, constant reflection and the development of new contributions that constitute its capacity for intergenerational dialogue and critical updating. Promoting and supporting new generations of researchers and institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean is among CLACSO's priority objectives.

To this end, the Executive Secretariat invites researchers in training from its network to submit essays on their main lines of work that involve new approaches to classic problems or the study of emerging objects in social research, with a Latin American focus and generational perspective.

This initiative aims to develop a collection of books that aspires to highlight the production of emerging generations of researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean, to create a space for visibility and open access dissemination of the results of their work, reflections and research.

In this first edition, the topics associated with the following thematic areas will be of particular relevance:

– Popular and alternative economies

– New right-wing movements and threats to the democratic system

– Ecofeminism, rural care and community care

New deadline for submitting proposals: March 13, 2023

Date of publication of results: May/June 2023

Deadline for submission of completed books: 120 days from the date of publication of the results

  1. The overall objective of the call is to start a collection of collective books that involves new approaches to classic problems or the study of emerging objects in social research, with a Latin American focus and generational perspective.
  2. The fields or areas of knowledge should preferably be the subject of trans, inter and multidisciplinary studies and be addressed by researchers belonging to CLACSO Member Centers and associates.
  1. Those interested should register on the CLACSO website. To do so, they will have access to an online form where they must complete the minimum information required for the evaluation of the publishing project.
  2. Only one form per proposal should be completed by a single user account, which must belong to the coordinator or one of the coordinators. Chapter authors should not access the registration system.
  3. The application must include a publishing proposal consisting of a justification of the novelty of the subject matter or the perspective from which it is approached, and a tentative table of contents. The complete book is not expected to be submitted at the application stage.
  4. The selected projects will have 120 days from the date of publication of the results to deliver the finished books.
  5. The project may have a coordinator, who must be linked to centers associated with CLACSO.
  6. Each proposal must have a minimum of 10 (ten) and a maximum of 15 (fifteen) chapters, by authors in gender parity, with representation from 6 countries, in order to guarantee that each volume has plural perspectives that reflect on new problems of study and approaches in the social sciences and humanities of the region.
  7. The complete book may extend to a maximum of 300 pages in Times New Roman 12 format, with one and a half spacing.
  8. The texts included in the selected editorial proposals must be original and must not have been published in other media.

To ensure the unity of the collection, each publishing project must submit a proposal that respects the following structure:

  1. A preliminary study that aims to provide a broad overview of the new area or areas of knowledge or new approach addressed by the publication (for example: the new right and threats to the democratic system). This study should consider the theoretical, methodological, and thematic transformations that the emergence of this new object or perspective entails within the field of study in which it is situated.
  2. A minimum of 3 (three) and a maximum of 5 (five) sections in which thematic approaches to the studied problem are organized.
  3. The selected books must be submitted in their complete and final version, adapted to the editorial standards that will be communicated in due course.
  1. The proposals submitted will be reviewed for their formal and administrative aspects to ensure compliance with the call for proposals. Proposals that do not meet the established requirements will be subject to technical review.
  2. Proposals that advance to the next stage will be evaluated by an Editorial Committee, which will assess their quality and relevance. To ensure impartiality, all proposals must be submitted under a pseudonym.
  3. The call may select up to three works or be declared void if the proposals submitted do not meet the required quality standards.
  4. Situations not covered by this call for applications will be resolved by the convening institution.
  5. The ruling will be final.
