"Culture, geopolitics and power in Colombia": reflections on the global scenario and the country's challenges

On Friday March 13., between the 8: 00 and 13: 00 hours Colombia time, it will take place in the Marino Troncoso Auditorium of the Pontifical Javeriana University, in Bogotá, the discussion “Culture, geopolitics and power in Colombia. Where are we and where are we going?”, an interdisciplinary space for reflection aimed at analyzing the transformations of the international scenario and their expressions in the Colombian context.

The day will feature Opening remarks by Pablo Vommaro, Executive Director of CLACSO, who will participate in the opening of the meeting along with representatives of the organizing institutions.

The conference aims to address the geopolitical, economic, and cultural changes shaping the contemporary world, characterized by global socio-environmental crises, disputes over strategic resources, and profound transformations in the modes of knowledge production and dissemination. In this context, the social sciences and humanities acquire renewed centrality for understanding the reconfiguration of the global order and the tensions affecting democracies and current political projects.

Likewise, the event will seek to examine the impact of phenomena such as the advance of digital and financial capitalism, the growing concentration of information technologies and the development of artificial intelligence, processes that not only reorganize the global economy but also transform sensibilities, political languages, forms of sociability and modalities of collective action.

From this perspective, the discussion proposes to reflect on the connections between geopolitics and cultureConsidering both its global effects and its localized manifestations, the discussion will focus particularly on Colombia, addressing the political challenges related to the reconfiguration of the state project, the struggles for recognition of diversity, the dispute over territories and strategic resources, and the emergence of new political subjectivities.

Rather than offering definitive diagnoses, the meeting seeks to strengthen interdisciplinary dialogues that allow for critical thinking about the present and contribute to building fairer and more democratic horizons in Latin America and the Caribbean.
