Agreement with San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina
On Tuesday, October 5, CLACSO signed a broad cooperation agreement with the San Lorenzo de Almagro Club of Argentina, which includes scholarships and the organization of joint activities.
Representing CASLA were its President Horacio Arreceygor; Mariana Cahn, Assemblywoman; Leandro Gamallo, Member of La Soriano and of the Culture Subcommittee, co-coordinator of the CLACSO Working Group “Vigilantism and collective violence”; and Nuria Escobar, President of the club's culture subcommittee.
On behalf of CLACSO: Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary, and Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research.
The agreement covers, among other aspects, 50% scholarships for workers, members and athletes of the club to access CLACSO's training proposals; the organization of joint seminars and public activities; study and research initiatives in conjunction with CLACSO Working Groups, for example, with the GT "Vigilantism and collective violence" and the one on "Sport, culture and society".
Pablo Vommaro highlighted that “this is the third agreement that CLACSO has signed with social and sports clubs, advancing the social and cultural character of sport, being able to think about the dimension linked to institutions, with social dynamics and, of course, with the problems that our societies go through (…) We know that San Lorenzo, at least on the Argentine map, has a lot of social life, a lot of community activity, and a lot of neighborhood and territorial integration.”
Leandro Gamallo emphasized that “the club has been promoting a series of activities to reinforce the importance of professionalism in women's football, striving to ensure that women have the role they deserve in sports in particular and in sports institutions in general. It goes without saying how much importance San Lorenzo places on all these issues, being, among other things, the first club to professionalize its women's football team. Therefore, from the club's perspective, this is another step in San Lorenzo de Almagro's commitment to social and cultural issues, human rights, and the international ties the club fosters with various non-governmental organizations, in this case with perhaps the most important social science institution in Latin America.”
Horacio Arreceygor added that “San Lorenzo has always been extremely community-oriented, with a strong presence in the neighborhood and the community, and significant social work, which was greatly strengthened during the pandemic.” (…) “These types of agreements not only strengthen our members, but we also want to provide support for our athletes, enabling them to access education and many community centers, which in turn strengthen the institution and empower us as leaders and as members.”
Finally, Karina Batthyány emphasized that this agreement with Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro is part of “our overall work focused on sports, culture, and society, with the aim of strengthening CLACSO's connection with social organizations, in this case with social and sports organizations, which we believe is an area where, as the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, we still need to deepen our work (…) We understand that these types of agreements allow us to improve and strengthen this collaboration, which is our ongoing concern.” She reaffirmed “CLACSO's commitment to working together with CASLA on research, training, dissemination, seminars, and all the activities we regularly carry out,” and concluded by celebrating this new agreement with a social and sports club in Latin America and the Caribbean.
