Havana, May 21, 2026

The CLACSO Working Group “Labor in Contemporary Capitalism” calls upon the academic and intellectual community, as well as social movements worldwide, to take an active stance in denouncing the critical situation facing the Cuban people, expressing strong rejection of the continuous and systematic policy of harassment that the United States government is carrying out against the Republic of Cuba. In recent months, we have witnessed a dangerous escalation of tensions that not only stifles the island's economy but also directly violates international law and the sovereignty of nations.

We highlight the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade, a cruel, suffocating and criminal policy that seeks the social collapse of the country, also causing internal struggles to arise in the country.

The energy and oil blockade, the persecution of ships, shipping companies, and businesses that supply fuel to Cuba, is an act of modern piracy that paralyzes hospitals, schools, and industries, directly impacting the daily lives of the Cuban people. Added to this are the sanctions against other companies with investments in Cuba that provided capital, which, due to the sanctions and the resulting uncertainty, have decided to leave the country.

The Cultural and Media War plays an important role, manipulating the situation in Cuba to feed the large information monopolies to distort the reality of the country, hiding that the root cause of the difficulties is the blockade.

Added to this, the threats of aggression are getting closer every day and alarms are increasing regarding a military intervention, and the bilateral coercive sanctions that lack all international legitimacy.

One of the latest mechanisms deployed by the empire is the unfounded charges against the historical leader Raúl Castro, a crude manipulation of political and judicial persecution that seeks to delegitimize the revolutionary process and criminalize its historical figures.

Latin America and the Caribbean have formally declared the region a Zone of Peace. The actions of the US administration violate this fundamental principle and represent a threat to the stability of the entire continent. A US intervention on the island would have international repercussions. There is a shared history, culture, and collective identity that permeates every social process and shapes us as a nation, an example of resilience and dignity. The US, in the name of its president, seeks a self-serving victory to bolster a claim of world domination that it has been unable to legitimize because a small Caribbean island prevents it.

We demand the immediate end of the blockade, the removal of Cuba from the spurious list of state sponsors of terrorism, and the cessation of political persecution against its leaders.

International solidarity with Cuba! Respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples! And we urge all the peoples of the world to denounce the interventionist policies of the U.S. government. Homeland or Death, We Will Overcome!
