Condemnation of the terrorist acts that occurred in Brasilia

El CLACSO Working Group on Violence, Governments and Democracy It expresses its deepest condemnation of the serious terrorist acts that occurred in Brasilia on January 8, 2023, which threaten the democratic rule of law guaranteed by the country's 1988 Constitution. We vehemently condemn the violent and criminal acts of depredation against the headquarters buildings of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches at the federal level, which express a clear affront against a legitimately elected government and vilify the historical and cultural memory of the Brazilian people through the destruction and looting of an invaluable national heritage.

We express our solidarity with the government of President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva and the Brazilian people. We hope that all those who, through action or omission, contributed to this regrettable episode will be identified and held accountable.

We reiterate our appreciation and commitment to Brazilian democracy and our unwavering defense of the democratic rule of law.
