InterGTs statement on the situation of the elections in Venezuela
As feminist researchers and members of the CLACSO Working Groups Epistemologies of the South y Feminisms, resistance and emancipationCommitted to social transformation towards a democratic and egalitarian region in all the countries that comprise it, we feel called to express our position and solidarity towards Venezuela, and especially towards its people and its women, who deserve to live free and in peace.
Presidential elections were held on July 28, 2024, which, beyond choosing who would govern and direct the country's destiny for six years, aimed to improve and institutionalize Venezuelan life, reducing confrontations that for many years have determined political actions, negatively impacting the daily life of society as a whole.
The Venezuelan people turned out peacefully and in massive numbers to vote. As always in elections, they demonstrated unwavering civic responsibility and the strong democratic conviction of the majority. The Venezuelan people trust in the vote as an unquestionable mechanism for reconciling differences and guaranteeing the transparency of the democratic process. Despite various challenges and strategies, the percentage of registered voters who cast their ballots was overwhelming.
Today, we affirm that it is essential to honor the democratic will of the Venezuelan people and commit to peace. It is necessary that the electoral body, with the oversight of the international community, provide timely and reliable transparency and irrefutable evidence regarding the election results, so as not to give rise to uncertainty and collective distrust, nor to allow an opportunity for those who seek to stir up controversy by creating a climate of violence and hyperpolarization, where they hope to gain the upper hand. We urge the government, which has the obligation to protect the right to peaceful protest, to provide the necessary guarantees for exercising this right, ensuring respect for human rights in their entirety for all.
The Venezuelan people are wounded and hurt; the construction is for peace and for the defense of a full democracy, which provides guarantees and defense of fundamental rights for all and reflects the true will of the Venezuelan people.
