Statement in solidarity with the Cuban people
El CLACSO Working Group Critical Studies of Rural Development expresses its solidarity with Cuba and condemns the US blockade and interference in its economy, sovereignty and the freedom of its people.
The Cuban people have suffered for more than half a century under the economic, financial, and commercial blockade imposed unilaterally by the United States government and supported by other imperialist countries, a situation exacerbated by the more than 240 sanctions added by the Trump administration. These measures have been maintained by the Biden administration, which has even decided to increase them. This further hinders Cuba's access to medicines, food, and supplies, especially medical supplies needed to combat the pandemic. Even amid such adverse conditions, Cuba stands as an example of sovereignty and independence, being the first Latin American country to produce its own COVID-19 vaccines, with three vaccine candidates and two vaccines that are 100% effective. In this context, the current socioeconomic situation cannot be understood without considering this context.
That is why it is outrageous to hear capitalist and dissident voices from abroad clamoring about the crisis situation in Cuba with the SOS CUBA campaign, demanding the opening of a “humanitarian corridor” and even the use of force to “liberate the Cuban people”, in a clear call for foreign (“humanitarian”) intervention.
Thus, from the CLACSO Working Group Critical Studies of Rural Development We express our strongest rejection of the intervention of the United States of America government which, under the guise of “humanitarian intervention”, seeks to undermine the sovereignty and the right of the Cuban people to self-determination.
We express our solidarity with the Cuban people's struggle against foreign interference and the criminal blockade imposed upon them by U.S. imperialism during decades of economic, political, and military siege. We join in solidarity with all the peoples of Latin America and the world who, since 1992, have demanded that the United States lift the blockade against Cuba, as occurred last June at the United Nations General Assembly, where 184 countries condemned this criminal and genocidal policy. We also denounce the destabilization operations promoted by the U.S. government and its secret intelligence agencies, along with a deluge of fake news disseminated by various international mass media outlets.
The current crisis is caused by the blockade against the island. Therefore, lifting the blockade is urgent and necessary to resolve the social crisis Cuba faces today. Only then can the Cuban people build dignified solutions and design sovereign mechanisms to decide their future, collectively building their right to live in peace.
As the CLACSO Working Group, we join the voices from across the globe rejecting the imperialist modus operandi of pitting the Cuban people against each other in order to exploit and seize control of this territory. We demand an end to the criminal blockade imposed against the Cuban people, which constitutes a crime against humanity.
From Latin America, we must feel compelled to strengthen channels of solidarity with Cuba, with concrete and material support to send medical supplies and economic aid. Therefore, from the CLACSO Working Group Critical Studies of Rural Development We join the campaigns that are being deployed throughout Our America and the world through different nodes in each country and we call on all our academic colleagues from CLACSO and Latin America to participate in these solidarity actions, concrete and urgent.
