200 Years After the Guayaquil Meeting: Legacies and Challenges in Building Latin American Unity

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the meeting between Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) are convening the international colloquium “200 Years Since the Guayaquil Meeting: Legacies and Challenges in the Construction of Latin American Unity” on Tuesday, July 26, with live broadcast on CLACSO.tv.
When San Martín addressed Simón Bolívar, he told him that “America will not forget the day we embrace.” Regarding this historic meeting between two of the most important leaders of the Americas, CELAC, CLACSO, and the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs offer a collective reflection that contributes to understanding the past and present meanings of the emancipatory struggles on our continent. What were the implications of that meeting? Under what premises has it been interpreted? What controversies surround it? What does it tell us today? The meeting, which will include the participation of prominent colleagues from across the continent, aims to reflect on one of the most important events in our region.
