Colonialism, sovereignty and development in the 21st century
On Wednesday, May 4, 2023, the seminar “ Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic: Colonialism, Sovereignty and Development in the 21st Century ” was held in the Cedro Room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina. Co-organized by the Secretariat for the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), it included the participation of representatives from the Institute of Culture, Society and State of the National University of Tierra del Fuego (ICSE-UNTDF), among others.
The meeting provided an opportunity to present the book *Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic: Colonialism, Sovereignty and Development in the 21st Century * (which was first presented at the 9th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences, Mexico 2022). This book is a co-publication resulting from a research grant promoted by the Secretariat for the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, the Undersecretariat of University Policies of the Argentine Ministry of Education, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, and the Academic Secretariat of the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF). This process was supported by the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires (FFyL-UBA), the Center for Innovation of Workers – Metropolitan University for Education and Labor (CITRA – UMET), and the Institute of Culture, Society and State of the National University of Tierra del Fuego (ICSE-UNTDF).
The authors of the book (both in person and remotely) participated in a very fruitful dialogue, which was also attended by evaluators of the Call for Proposals and representatives from the National University of Tierra del Fuego and the Secretariat for the Malvinas, Antarctica, and South Atlantic of the Ministry hosting the meeting. The opening remarks were delivered by Secretary Guillermo Carmona; Minister Marcelo Balbi, Coordinator of Oceanic and South Atlantic Affairs; and Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research at CLACSO, who conveyed greetings from Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of the institution.
With the themes "Sovereignty and colonialism", "Legacy and current situation" and "Malvinas in the Latin American-Caribbean context", the word circulated among the attendees for more than two hours, showing the heterogeneity of topics around the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic and the importance of its treatment today, as a cause not only Argentine, but also Latin American and Caribbean.
