CLACSO and Siglo XXI Editores México jointly launch the collection Latin American Perspectives: A State of the Debate

Since its founding in 1967, CLACSO It has made a sustained contribution, through numerous initiatives, to the development of the Social Sciences and Humanities in Latin America and the Caribbean. By organizing agile and powerful academic groups and networks, the Council facilitated the circulation of knowledge, prioritizing research produced in the region across multiple fields.

The Council has promoted Latin American and Caribbean thought, highlighting both its most original features and its contributions to universal knowledge from a critical perspective, situated in the Global South and committed to democratic social transformations. Its publications and open access program has been one of the channels through which researchers, intellectuals, and academics from the region have developed and published the results of their work, reflections, and research, making substantial contributions in numerous fields of knowledge.

XXI century Editors Founded in Mexico fifty years ago, this publishing house is one of the most prestigious on the continent, built on a rich and extensive catalog with a special emphasis on publications in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Its books have not only brought new ideas, making the best of critical thought traditions available to hundreds of thousands of readers across the continent; they have also served as a mirror in which we can see ourselves and reflect as a region, following the founding principles of its founder, Arnaldo Orfila Reynal: the highest academic rigor, appealing to the intelligence of its readers.

In recent times, fields of knowledge have undergone numerous transformations, both in their methods of producing and communicating ideas and reflections, and in the ways in which research objects are constructed and approaches to their study are developed. Being able to account for these changes, build critical reflection on them, and generate new approaches from a regional perspective is a task as essential as it is challenging for the current development of knowledge.

The Executive Secretariat of CLACSO and Siglo XXI Editores Mexico They are promoting a new publishing project, which seeks to highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions made by academics from Latin America and the Caribbean, reflecting the current state of the debate in multiple fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Latin American Perspectives: A State of the Debate This collection focuses on highlighting new theoretical, methodological, and thematic developments in various fields of knowledge. The books in this collection aim to bring together works that present the latest findings related to the themes, approaches, theoretical perspectives, research questions, and objects of study in the Social Sciences and Humanities, from a perspective that seeks to emphasize the originality and relevance of the knowledge produced in the region.

In this first edition, special emphasis will be placed on topics related to the following fields of study:

  1. Inequalities and violence, especially gender-based violence.
  2. The processes of political, economic and social instability.
  3. Alternatives to the environmental crisis.
  4. The right to migration and human mobility.

Deadline for submitting proposals: July 26, 2020

  1. The overall objective of the call is to develop a collection of books that address, from different theoretical and methodological perspectives, the new developments and transformations taking place in the fields of knowledge of the Social Sciences and the Humanities.
  2. The fields or areas of knowledge should preferably be the subject of trans, inter and multidisciplinary studies and be addressed by researchers belonging to CLACSO member and associated centers.
  1. Those interested should register on the CLACSO website. To do so, they will have access to an online form where they must complete the minimum information required for the evaluation of the publishing project.
  2. The application must present an editorial proposal consisting of a justification on the novelties of the area of ​​knowledge in question and a tentative index with the topics and authors who would participate in the project. The complete book is not expected to be submitted during the application process.
  3. The project may have up to three coordinators, who must be linked to centers associated with CLACSO.
  4. Each proposal must have a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 20 chapters, by authors from at least 10 countries, in order to ensure that each volume includes perspectives that reflect on the state of the debate in different countries of the region.
  5. The articles included in the selected editorial proposals must be original and must not have been published in other media.

To ensure the unity of the collection, each publishing project must submit a proposal that respects the following structure:

  1. A preliminary study that aims to provide a broad overview of the area or areas of knowledge addressed by the publication (for example: the relationship between environment and society). This study should consider the theoretical, methodological, and thematic transformations that the field has undergone in recent years.
  2. A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 sections in which thematic approaches to the area of ​​knowledge are organized.
  3. Each book will have a maximum length of one million characters including spaces.
  1. For the implementation of the publishing project, the CLACSO Executive Secretariat will award up to five grants of up to $2.000 each for the development of the initiatives, one for each selected project. The grants will be distributed through the coordinators of each project.
  2. The support will be paid in two installments. The first will be made effective once the editorial proposal has been selected, and the second upon presentation of the complete and final original manuscript, for which the deadline for receiving materials is set as December 30, 2020.
  3. The 5 selected projects will receive technical support from the editorial team of CLACSO and Siglo XXI Editores México.
  1. The proposals submitted will be reviewed for their formal and administrative aspects to ensure compliance with the call for proposals. Proposals that do not meet the established requirements will be subject to technical review.
  2. The proposals that advance to the next stage will be evaluated by an International Editorial Committee comprised of five judges who will assess the quality and relevance of the proposals. To ensure impartiality, all proposals must be submitted under a pseudonym.
  3. The call may select up to five works or be declared void if the proposals submitted do not meet the required quality standards.
  4. Situations not covered by this call for applications will be resolved by the convening institutions.
  5. The ruling will be final.

The authors declare that all rights to the winning works of this competition belong entirely and exclusively to them and assign and transfer to EL CONSEJO and SIGLO XXI EDITORES México all exclusive and worldwide rights of publication and sale in all languages ​​in the format that EL CONSEJO and SIGLO XXI EDITORES México deem appropriate, for which they will not receive any royalties.
  2. ISBN and Legal Deposit registrations will be processed by CLACSO and SIGLO XXI EDITORES México. CLACSO reserves the right to include the final digital book in its Virtual Library and Latin American Bookstore, as well as to make it available for free and unrestricted distribution and download.
  3. Likewise, CLACSO and SIGLO XXI EDITORES México may use the work to establish publishing partnerships that allow for a greater and wider circulation of the material through print and digital media.

The Executive Secretariat of CLACSO and Siglo XXI Editores México are launching a new publishing project that seeks to highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions of academics from Latin America and the Caribbean, reflecting the current state of debate in multiple fields of the Social Sciences and Humanities. The call for proposals received over 100 projects, of which 40 were deemed admissible after an initial technical evaluation. A jury composed of members of CLACSO and Siglo XXI selected 7 exceptionally high-quality proposals, expanding the support that was originally planned for 5 volumes.   

The criteria that justified this pre-selection were based on a gender balance (noted in the general index of the volumes), the focus on the axes suggested in the call, the unpublished and original nature of the proposals as well as the contribution to the field of knowledge through an interdisciplinary perspective, guaranteeing regional balance through the participation of researchers from CLACSO Member Centers from at least 10 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and the expected potential impact at the academic and publishing level.
