Tuesday, October 1st, was etched not only in the memory of Mexico but of the entire region with the inauguration of claudia sheinbaum as the first female president of her country and as a continuation of the outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“For the first time in the Republic’s 200-year history, there will be a woman president, and she will be transformative. Thank you to all Mexicans. Today, with our vote, we demonstrated that we are a democratic people,” Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo celebrated her victory at the polls on Sunday, June 2nd, emphasizing that “I didn’t arrive alone; we all arrived together. We arrived with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our ancestors, our mothers, daughters, and granddaughters.”

On that occasion, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) congratulated her on such a resounding victory. “With Claudia Sheinbaum, we shared two experiences that profoundly marked #CLACSO2022 in Mexico City: the opening of the Conference itself at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the meeting with the Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez before the closing of the 9th Latin American and Caribbean Conference of Social Sciences, in the Zócalo square in Mexico City in June 2022,” she recalled. Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO, in a column for the InfoCLACSO program. And she emphasized that “she was very well received by many participants of the #CLACSO2022 Conference with shouts of 'President, President,' which marked the beginning of an electoral campaign that would later confirm her as a presidential candidate for Mexico 2025.”

The former head of government of Mexico City won decisively on June 2nd at the head of the "Let's Continue Making History" alliance, made up of Morena, the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM).
