The auditorium of the School of Architecture at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, was the setting for a highly relevant open class, which was attended by three prominent activist intellectuals: the professor and former Minister of Women and Racial Equality of Brazil, Nilma Lino Gomes; the professor from the University of Amherst (Masschusetts), Agustín Lao-Montes; and the Afro-Argentine professor and activist Federico PitaThe class presentation was given by Pablo Vommaro, academic secretary of CLACSO.
This event, organized by the CLACSO Working Group on Civilizational Crisis, Reconfigurations of Racism and Afro-Latin American Social MovementsIt was presented as an essential preamble to the seminar "Historical Reparations and Intertwined Inequalities: Towards Reparative Justice and Afro-Reparations".

Nilma Lino Gomes, an influential voice in Brazilian politics and academia, is widely recognized for her work promoting gender equality and human rights. Agustín Lao-Montes, for his part, is an internationally renowned scholar known for his incisive analyses of racial dynamics in the contemporary context. Federico Pita, a committed activist and distinguished academic, brings a critical perspective deeply rooted in the struggle for the rights of Afro-Brazilians.
During the meeting, the speakers underscored the urgent need to delve deeper into the study and implementation of the concept of reparations. They emphasized that this concept is often reduced or misinterpreted, requiring a rigorous analytical approach to effectively address historical and contemporary inequalities.
This open class not only enriched the academic debate, but also reinforced the commitment of CLACSO and the Working Group to promoting a critical and transformative agenda that links racial justice with the fight against all inequalities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
