CLACSO rejects the violation of international law that occurred at the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador

In the early hours of Saturday, April 6, Ecuadorian government police forces entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito and forcibly removed the former vice president of Ecuador, who had requested political asylum and was under protection at the diplomatic mission. This act, a violation of international law, is reprehensible and deserves the strong condemnation of the academic community that defends the values ​​of freedom and international cooperation.

The Ecuadorian government was not content with expelling the Mexican Ambassador to Ecuador, Dr. Raquel Serur, an internationally renowned academic and the widow of the Latin American thinker Bolívar Echeverría; they also attacked the diplomatic corps, ultimately storming the embassy in a flagrant violation of Mexico's national sovereignty. The right to asylum has been part of the high humanitarian values ​​of Latin America and the world for over a century, and as such, it must be preserved.

Actions against international law and the territorial sovereignty of countries jeopardize democratic coexistence, the historical relations of our nations, ongoing cooperation efforts, and the cultural, social, and commercial relations on which our America is based.

In a context of increasing restrictions on civil liberties in some countries of the region, this diplomatic incident is worrying and we, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, reject it, calling for a return to the path of international law that guarantees peace and social justice.
