CLACSO at Shanghai International Studies University

As part of CLACSO's extensive tour in China, the Executive Secretary and Directors visited the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) and held important meetings.

On the university campus, CLACSO Executive Secretary Karina Batthyány gave a lecture entitled: “Knowing reality to transform it. The importance of the Social Sciences in the current situation.”

Also presenting were Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research and Working Groups, and Nicolás Arata, Director of Training and Editorial Production.

The occasion provided an opportunity for CLACSO authorities to hold important meetings with Yu Man, Dean of the Faculty of European and Latin American Studies at SISU, and Vice Dean Yang Ming, along with professors from the same institution: Cao Yufei, Lige, Du Bingchi, and Felisa Zhang. It is worth noting that SISU is a CLACSO Member Center in China.

Progress was made with SISU authorities on an agreement to establish a program for the exchange of professors and students between Latin America and China. In this regard, Karina Batthyány highlighted not only the meetings with the authorities but also “the encounter with graduate students; we were pleasantly surprised by their level of information, their understanding and knowledge of the Latin American region, and their excellent command of the Spanish language.” With all of them, the groundwork has been laid for many forms of cooperation and exchange “with the aim of strengthening the perspective of the Global South.”

Felisa Zhang, in turn, highlighted the importance of the meeting: “There are many areas where SISU and CLACSO can make progress, such as developing joint programs like calls for applications for undergraduate and graduate students. Furthermore, CLACSO can offer additional resources, for example, specializations for graduate students.”

Finally, Karina Batthyány emphasized that “the work opportunities opening up are numerous, as is the possibility of showcasing all of Latin American and Caribbean research and our anthologies of Latin American and Caribbean thought in China. To that end, the translation of many of our works into Chinese will be fundamental. Furthermore, we will begin with an exchange program, a research program, and a third program to disseminate CLACSO's work in China, with a view to establishing a center between CLACSO and SISU that will allow for greater cooperation and fluidity from this perspective of the Global South.”
