CLACSO in Beijing
In CLACSO's tour of China, after the fruitful stop in Shanghai, it is time for Beijing to participate, on Monday, November 18, in the Conference "Latin American cultural studies: multidisciplinary challenges" organized by the Institute of Foreign Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).
Karina Batthyany, Executive Secretary of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), presented on: “Understanding Reality to Transform It: The Importance of the Social Sciences in the Current Context.” Two CLACSO Directors also spoke: Pablo Vommaro on “Subculture and the Social Movement of Latin American Youth,” and Gustavo Lema on the topic of open access and the dissemination of knowledge in our continent.
Interviewed for CLACSO Radio, Xu Schicheng, a professor at the Institute, stated: “I hope that CLACSO will continue to play an important role in promoting the social sciences and also in promoting the cause of justice, sovereignty and independence in Latin America.” He emphasized the importance for China of expanding its knowledge of Latin America, and noted that each of the 23 provinces in his country has an academy of social sciences.

Fernando Wei Ran, a researcher at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, also highlighted the importance of CLACSO's presence in Beijing and described: “We are at a crucial moment; there are many changes. For example, in South American countries, there are presidential elections. In China as well, we have academic changes.” and encouraged the search for a vision different from the North American and European ones “to consider new trends in the Global South.”
