CLACSO at ALAS 2026
Organized by the Conference of the Latin American Association of Social Sciences (WINGS), the XXXV Latin American Congress of Sociology It is held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from July 26 to 31, with the participation of Latin American Council of Social Sciences.
The general theme of the ALAS 2026 Congress, “Between polycrisis and alternatives: horizons of Latin American critical sociology“This call for reflection on a contemporary climate profoundly transformed by multiple and interdependent crises—political, economic, social, climatic, energy, ecological, and geopolitical—that are rapidly reshaping life in our societies and putting sociological work under strain. Added to this are growing threats to university autonomy, critical research, and the social sciences in general.”

-From the 22nd to the 25th, the III Graduate School of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Social Studies, an alliance between CLACSO and ALAS; this year it has the support of Marielle Franco Foundation from Brazil.

Monica Bruckmann: Political scientist Monica Bruckmann is an international reference in her studies on geopolitics, strategic natural resources, regional integration and transformation of the world economic system. Professor of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) and professor of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), her career brings together academic and international articulation in networks such as CLACSO, UNESCO/REGGEN and ALAI.
Montserrat Sagot: With a solid academic background at the University of Costa Rica and a PhD in sociology from the American University (USA), Sagot articulates political and gender sociology to analyze structural inequalities and violence in our societies. Além disso, her work stands out in Latin American feminism, being co-coordinator of the Working Group of CLACSO “Feminismo, Resistência e Processos Emancipatórios” and co-coordinator of the GT de Feminismos da ALAS.

El XXXV Latin American Congress of Sociology This is a crucial meeting for the academic community at a time when Latin America and the Caribbean face urgent challenges to democracy, social justice, regional integration and the public role of the social sciences.
Faced with a conflictive and worrying scenario, ALAS 2026 aspires to be a public refuge for free debate, a platform to make visible the struggles for the public university, a space to defend critical thinking and, above all, a place to rebuild intellectual energies, address controversial issues, share relevant sociological diagnoses and co-construct alternatives in a particularly challenging historical moment.
According to its organizers: “Our time is not made up only of setbacks. Resistance, new political grammars, and horizons of hope are also emerging. The diversity of activism, worldviews, struggles, uprisings, and experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean challenges sociology today to renew its commitment to the social imagination, reclaim its legacy, and project it toward possible futures.”
