CLACSO Working Group on Science and Society
Social studies in science and technology in Latin America have been developing in the region for half a century. The field's origins in the 1960s gave it distinctive characteristics that have persisted, with varying degrees of intensity, throughout the decades, within the framework of new models and ways of thinking about development and addressing the conditions of poverty and exclusion in our societies. Once the field had professionalized—and in dialogue with the dynamics of its development in the Global North—the reflections initiated in the 1960s were revisited from new questions and perspectives, while efforts were made to construct original views on the social, economic, and political meanings of science and technology. This led to the development of analytical approaches and perspectives that draw on contributions from the field internationally and enrich them with regional perspectives. *Science, Technology, and Society in Latin America* is organized into five varied and heterogeneous sections, all focused on Latin America, in which a wide range of social problems are discussed. The wealth of research shared by these studies is aimed at overcoming the underdevelopment and dependency of our countries and finding appropriate strategies to improve living conditions in the region. With a multifaceted and interdisciplinary perspective, young researchers from across the continent demonstrate the richness and relevance of current research in this field.
