Open science as a common good
El CLACSO Working Group on Open Science as a Common Good It brings together forty-three researchers from Latin America, the Caribbean, Angola and Spain with the aim of consolidating open science as a public good, in the face of the processes of commodification of knowledge.
During the period 2026–2028, the Working Group will develop a comparative research agenda encompassing the diagnosis of public policies, regulations, and regulatory gaps in the region; the critical analysis of scientific infrastructures—repositories, portals, indexes, etc.—with an emphasis on the Diamond Open Access model and technological sovereignty; and the study of academic evaluation systems and their impact on knowledge inequalities. In addition to academic output, the Working Group promotes policy advocacy through national forums, multi-stakeholder dialogues, and policy briefs situated within the Global South. It collaborates with strategic networks such as Redalyc, Latindex, and La Referencia, and actively participates in international initiatives such as ALMASI and the Diamond Open Access Global Summit and UNESCO. The Working Group positions itself as a space for critical research and as a regional leader in global debates on open science, open infrastructures, and the commons.
