Workers' Innovation Center – Argentina

The Workers' Innovation Center (CITRA) is a joint implementing unit of CONICET and UMET, the Metropolitan University for Education and Work of Argentina, strategically associated with trade union organizations to produce science and technology capabilities with the perspective and participation of workers.
The Center encompasses diverse, flexible, and dynamic lines of research. Among these, the construction of economic, social, and political indicators stands out, enabling the observation of contemporary society and providing reliable, high-quality scientific information to support organizational and change processes.
In this respect, union and professional training is key, because it allows us to identify current concerns and project future needs. Inter-union spaces focused on training, gender, and working conditions are privileged venues for connecting research, training, and union action.
Participatory action research and collaborative work play a central role in strengthening workers' organizations, both in the formal sector and the informal economy. We seek to understand how these organizational dynamics are linked to forms of governance and how they are part of the ways in which life is produced and reproduced.
We are also interested in understanding in depth the dynamics of social mobilization, and its impact on social policy and the life of organizations.
We explore the history of work and its key figures, but also its future, the future of labor relations, and organizational processes. We are concerned with current transformations, including studies on digital platforms, remote work, and teleworking. We are particularly interested in conducting sectoral studies of working conditions (in art, culture, communication, transportation, education, and health), but also in making cross-sectoral comparisons.
A central concern of the Center is the study of labor flexibility and precarity, union representations and organizational processes.
In addition to conducting empirical studies using qualitative and quantitative methods, the Center has a strong focus on social theories and political thought. Within the field of politics and the state, we are particularly interested in the composition and dynamics of elites in Argentina, both from a contemporary and historical perspective.
In this respect, the analysis of political discourse, and the production and reproduction of ideology, is key. We attribute a fundamental role to language and communication in the form and meaning that social processes acquire.
What unites the CITRA team is not a thematic line, a disciplinary field or a type of methodology, but a political-epistemological orientation: to know reality in order to transform it.
