Canudos: war and archive

 Canudos: war and archive

This book, co-published with Mecila, offers an innovative reading of Canudos's place in Brazilian history and literature. Juan Recchia Paez not only revisits Euclides da Cunha's classic Os sertões, but also decenters, interweaves, and rewrites it in light of a vast and heterogeneous archive: from military reports and chapbooks to photographs, newspapers, and popular testimonies.

In dialogue with contemporary theories on the archive, testimony and the subaltern, this book raises fundamental questions about the construction of the national, the popular and the modern and is part of a cultural critique that restores to literature its political power.
