The CLACSO Working Group on Crisis, Responses, and Alternatives in the Greater Caribbean and the Norman Girvan Chair of Caribbean Studies at the University of Havana are organizing this call for papers aimed at students, researchers, and social actors interested in and committed to addressing the negative effects of climate change in the Greater Caribbean. The content on climate change in the Caribbean is framed within the broader discussion of sustainable development and the specific challenges that small Caribbean island states, highly vulnerable to climate change, face on a daily basis.

The Seminar is an activity designed to broaden and deepen understanding of the nature and effects of climate change in the Caribbean and the design and implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures. It focuses on the economic, social, political, and cultural dimensions of these processes and uses the Greater Caribbean region, with an emphasis on the islands and the Cuban case, as its frame of reference.

Specific objectives:

  1. Analyze the effects of climate change on the environment, economies, communities, and cultures of the Greater Caribbean.
  2. To provide a space for learning and dialogue on the impact of climate change on development strategies in the insular Caribbean.
  3. Exchange knowledge among participants on actions to address climate change and successful experiences for mitigation and adaptation in the Greater Caribbean.
  4. Advance the formation of networks of researchers and activists interested in the effects of climate change in the Greater Caribbean.

will be selected up to 25 participants In total, with a focus on the countries of the Greater Caribbean (including all territories with Caribbean coastlines) and the insular Caribbean, particularly Cuba.

The organization will award 5 total participation scholarships These scholarships include round-trip airfare, accommodation, meals, and local transportation during the event. They will be awarded as follows: two as reimbursements of up to USD 1.000 each, and three covering the expenses outlined by the organizers. The evaluation committee will determine the recipients of each scholarship.

The other 20 participants will have their snacks and lunches covered during the days of the Seminar and will have to pay for their own travel and accommodation.

The seminar has no tuition or registration fees. and awards a certificate of participation.

Location: Faculty of Economics, University of Havana, Cuba
