CLACSO Working Group Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean
This book compiles the experiences of the First Seminar on Climate Change and its impacts in the Greater Caribbean of 2019, held at the University of Havana, Cuba, and organized by the CLACSO Working Group "Crisis, Responses and Alternatives in the Greater Caribbean" in conjunction with the "Norman Girvan" Chair of Caribbean Studies.
The cross-cutting themes running through the selected articles are the role of public policies in addressing climate change in the Greater Caribbean; the connection with social movements and activism in addressing climate change in the Greater Caribbean; and the need to build networks that impact even global discourse and international relations. It is important to consider that, for Caribbean countries, recognizing the Caribbean's small size and vulnerability is central to formulating foreign policy and participating in international forums on climate and the environment. This argument is strategic for the development of negotiations. Regional positions need to identify commonalities in order to present a unified Caribbean perspective and convince international donors of the urgency of allocating funds and support to adaptation and mitigation projects. The Seminar was a positive experience in the effort to integrate the natural and social sciences around a singular theme: climate change and its impacts. Much remains to be done in the region in terms of advancing toward a comprehensive understanding of climate change from political, legal, and economic perspectives. The environment cannot be viewed in isolation from the social; environmental awareness cannot be formed without a social dimension.
