Open call to participate in the Seminar Climate Change in SIDS of the Caribbean: Impacts and Community Resilience

El CLACSO Working Group Crisis, responses and alternatives in the Greater Caribbean, Social Study Program for Disaster Risk from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences of the Dominican Republic and Norman Girvan Chair of Caribbean Studies at the University of Havana They are organizing this call aimed at students, researchers and social actors interested and committed to confronting the negative effects of climate change in small Caribbean island territories with emphasis on the case of Hispaniola. 

This Seminar follows two previous editions held in Havana and is part of the activities carried out by the aforementioned CLACSO Working Group to broaden and deepen discussions on the nature and effects of climate change in the Caribbean and the design and implementation of actions for its mitigation and adaptation.

Specific objectives:

1. Analyze and discuss the effects of climate change in the insular Caribbean in a post-COVID-19 environment, with special emphasis on the impact on economies, policies, ecosystems and communities.

2. To provide a learning space on the impact of climate change on development strategies in the insular Caribbean, with emphasis on the experiences of the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean islands.

3. Exchange knowledge among participants on the design, implementation and monitoring of public policies and local initiatives designed to address climate change from the perspective of mitigation and adaptation.

4. Encourage dialogue between young researchers and activists interested in the effects of climate change in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, which can have a positive impact on the subsequent formation of networks.

Up to 20 participants will be selected in total, with a focus on insular Caribbean countries, particularly the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The seminar has no registration or enrollment fees and awards a certificate of participation.

Participants will have snacks and lunches covered during the days of the Seminar.
