Brazil at a crossroads

Brazil is heading towards a decisive second round. After a first round in which Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly defeated Lula, the country faces an election whose consequences far extend beyond its borders.

Transform! Europe organized the discussion “ Brazil at a Crossroads: Democracy, Latin America, the World: Presidential Election's Stakes ” on Tuesday, October 13th , with the participation of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences.

Pablo Vommaro , Executive Director of CLACSO, participates alongside Jana Silverman , Professor of International Relations and coordinator of the International Committee of the Digital Services Act (DSA), and Ana Saggioro García , co-coordinator of the Working Group “Lex mercatoria, corporate power and human rights”

Together they analyzed what is at stake for democracy and social rights in Brazil, for the balance of power in South America, and for a region facing a renewed Trumpian imperialism. They also discussed the implications of this outcome for progressive struggles and the defense of democracy worldwide, including in Europe, where the far right is watching closely and following the same script.
