SOME NOTES ON THE MEXICO-GUATEMALA TRANSBORDER AREA – Enrique Coraza de los Santos

In a 2005 article, the renowned Belgian historian Jan de Vos noted the process by which, in the 1980s, the concept of the Mexican Southeast shifted from a term applied to a geopolitical unit to that of the "Southern Border," based on a series of academic initiatives that emphasized this concept (p. 77). In this process, the consideration of the border territory as a region associated, above all, with migration processes gained ground. It is important to highlight figures such as the academic Manuel Angel Castillo, who is considered a key figure in the regionalization and border analysis (Fábregas and González, 2014:8).
