Working Group: Latinos in the United States
No. 3, November 2017

Casa de las Américas, through its Program of Studies on Latinos in the United States, held its fourth International Colloquium from October 16 to 18, 2017, on the theme of “Socialization of Latinos in the United States: Education, Religion, and Mass Media.” The Latino population in the United States exceeds 53 million and could reach 125 million in less than two decades. It is distinguished by the great diversity of geographic origins, identities, and unique processes of integration into the immigrant landscape of American society.

The arrival of the Trump administration represents a real threat to immigration in that country, both to undocumented immigrants, whose goal is to eliminate them, and to legal immigrants, whose immigration is to be reduced and redefined. There is talk of eliminating priority immigration procedures for family members and adult children of U.S. citizens to obtain visas and residency in the United States. The specter of discrimination, xenophobia, and selectivity is amplified by the proposal that new immigrants must speak English, have some level of education, and possess skills that supposedly allow them to actively integrate into the country's economy. The wall that is intended to be built on the border with Mexico is surpassed by the prevailing far-right ideology that underpins it.
