Working Group: Latinos in the United States
No. 1, April 2017

Many questions are emerging these days about the world of Latinos in the United States. A new presidential term has begun. We can highlight some of these issues by prioritizing a sociocultural perspective: how the constant flow of Latin American immigrants will be integrated into the current relationship between the receiving and sending countries, considering national security as a central focus for the new president; the impact of this emigration and its perceived threat of control—through remittances or return migration—on the sending countries; the implications of transnationalism for the culture and identity of migrants, their countries of origin, and the receiving society; the sociocultural relationships between Latinos and other ethnic groups in the United States; the current social construction of the Hispanic or Latino category and its reflection in various cultural, artistic, and entertainment industry expressions; and the reconfiguration of physical spaces (primarily urban) where Latin Americans and Caribbeans tend to concentrate in the United States.
Along the path of providing answers and/or seeking mechanisms to address them, we find the Program of Studies on Latinos in the United States at Casa de las Américas and the recently established Working Group of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). Both initiatives aim to foster a space for discussion and knowledge building under the aegis of multilateralism and the confrontation of discriminatory, pejorative, and prejudiced discourses that insist on viewing this population as threatening. In keeping with this commitment, we have created active spaces where the presence of people of Latin American and Caribbean origin residing in this territory and connected to the arts, literature, and social sciences and humanities contributes to the perpetuation of these ideas.
