The processes of dispossession faced by the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean for over five centuries, which shaped Latin American dependent capitalism, intensified significantly after the implementation of the neoliberal perspective. Poverty grew considerably throughout Latin America's history as a result of the structural reforms of the 1980s and 1990s. Through social welfare policies and cash transfers, its growth slowed in countries with progressive governments that restored the state's role in redistributive policies. What has continued to grow alarmingly is economic and social inequality, because the dispossession generated by capital accumulation has been constant and violent. In this context, CLACSO launched the call for papers, "Social Welfare and Disputes over the Public and the Commons in Latin America and the Caribbean," and the resulting insightful research became the chapters of this book, which comprises two volumes. In this volume, Worldviews and Rights, texts are presented that explore how civil society groups, with diverse worldviews and practices, dispute their rights to obtain crucial goods and services and, thus, to full well-being in the societies they comprise.
They are complemented by the other volume, entitled Identities and Territories.
