Attack on press freedom in Argentina

On Monday, March 4, three days after President Javier Milei announced its closure in his speech at the opening of the ordinary sessions of Congress, TelamThe Argentine national news agency, Agencia Nacional de Noticias (ANNA), woke up to find its website disabled and the buildings housing its newsroom in Buenos Aires fenced off. As a result, employees are unable to enter the premises and have been suspended from their duties for seven days.
Founded on April 14, 1945, as Telenoticiosa Americana, with the aim of countering the information hegemony of foreign agencies, Télam has been a key player for almost 79 years in major local, regional, and international events, providing invaluable service to small and large media outlets in all 24 districts of the country. In fact, it is the only news agency in Argentina with correspondents throughout the entire country, guaranteeing nationwide coverage.
At CLACSO we value this plurality and trajectory, the professionalism of its journalists, and we highlight the space they have been giving to our Council, periodically publishing opinion pieces, activities and editorial news from CLACSO.
No to the closure of Télam.
