GTA Women's Assembly, Kenya, August 2023

For her academic and activist contributions to the field of social movements, the Dr. Xochitl Leyva Solano (CIESAS Southeast/Co-coord. CLACSO Working Group Bodies, Territories, Resistances), was invited in 2021 by Gustavo Esteva and Arturo Escobar to be part of the Core Group of the Global Tapestry of Alternatives (GTA).

The GTA is a global network of networks with local and regional actions that works to create spaces for documentation, analysis, collaboration and exchange between radical alternatives to the dominant regime and in the face of the polycrisis in which we find ourselves as inhabitants of planet Earth.

The GTA recently held its world assembly from August 5-14, 2023, in Nanyuki, Kenya, Africa. Dr. Leyva was one of the 75 invited speakers and part of the facilitating team that prepared the glocal methodological proposal. At the assembly, the facilitating team, four networks of grassroots organizations (weavers) from Mexico, Colombia, Southeast Asia, and India, along with 75 representatives from supporting organizations (endorsers), discussed the types of alternatives being built, what unites us despite our diversity, and how to better connect and contribute to creating a critical mass of alternative approaches that can support the conditions for further promoting and strengthening the ongoing and urgent civilizational transitions on planet Earth.
