The CLACSO Steering Committee condemns the arbitrary detention of the sociologist Oscar Rene Vargas by the Nicaraguan police forces. Vargas was one of the co-founders of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) during the 1960s, a fighter against the Somoza dictatorship, a defender of social gains, and has contributed to the development of the Social Sciences through the publication of countless works on Central American social formations.

The CLACSO Steering Committee requests the authorities to release him immediately, to respect his fundamental rights and the physical and emotional integrity of this distinguished sociologist.
