Appropriation of digital technologies and intersectionalities

The production of technologies is the result of a human process embedded in (and the effect of) power relations and dynamics.

Activity in, on, with, and against technology is a central element in understanding the appropriation of digital technologies, the central subject of analysis in this study. CLACSO Working Group on the Appropriation of Digital Technologies and Intersectionality.

Appropriation expresses complex processes, and its conceptualization refers to individual and/or collective empowerment, but also to the modes of operation of capitalism itself in its neoliberal stage. Appropriation implies experimentation, creativity, disruptive use of proprietary technologies, and the creation of original technological innovation projects; it also embraces redesign, cultural adaptation, and the critical transfer and innovation of technologies.

We analyze these phenomena from an intersectional perspective, from the intersections between gender, race, ethnicity, territory, social class, and generation, which challenge the liberal concept of citizenship and strain the development of a new logic that some authors call surveillance capitalism and others, datafication.

In this context, the GT invites its members to coordinate their lines of work, work with the academic and non-academic community, co-create knowledge, and link national and international networks.
