Support for the declaration issued by the Afro-descendant Regional Articulation of the Americas and the Caribbean (ARAAC)
El CLACSO Working Group: Civilizational Crisis, Reconfigurations of Racism, Afro-Latin American Social Movements expresses its firm support for the declaration issued by the Afro-descendant Regional Articulation of the Americas and the Caribbean (ARAAC), which supports black candidates in the upcoming municipal elections in Brazil in October 2024.
In a context where structural racism and social exclusion remain painful realities, it is essential to recognize the crucial role played by Black candidates in the fight for social justice and racial equity. The political agenda of these candidates not only seeks to occupy positions of power, but also demands recognition and redress for the historical injustices suffered by Afro-descendant communities in Brazil and throughout the region.
We join ARAAC's call to strengthen democratic representation, ensuring that the voices of the Black population are heard and respected in the electoral process, free from violence and intimidation. We also commit to combating the rise of the far right, which poses a threat to the rights won by the most vulnerable populations.
From the Working Group, we call for solidarity and unity among all Afro-Latin American social movements in this crucial battle for a more just and anti-racist Brazil. The struggle for racial equality is a common struggle that transcends borders and demands the support of all the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
For an anti-racist Brazil and for a future where social justice is a right for all!
