Lula's convictions in Operation Lava Jato are overturned
Following the scandal caused by the leak of messages that exposed the joint work between prosecutors and then-judge Moro to convict former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a Supreme Court judge overturned all corruption convictions.
Arrested on April 7, 2018, the PT leader was released on November 8, 2019, after 580 days of unjust imprisonment. His illegitimate and arbitrary detention generated worldwide condemnation and numerous actions, of which the Latin American Council of Social Sciences was a key player.
CLACSO celebrates this halt to political persecution through the lawfare techniques that we have been tirelessly denouncing, with which Lula da Silva has been unjustly persecuted and condemned.
On March 8, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin overturned all of Lula's corruption convictions and ordered the investigation to be reopened in other courts due to the alleged bias of the Public Prosecutor's Office and former judge and minister Sérgio Moro. Fachin made this decision after granting a habeas corpus petition filed by the former president's defense team in the context of the cases stemming from the so-called "Lava Jato Operation," following the scandal generated by the leak of messages that exposed what Lula and the Workers' Party (PT) had always denounced: the secret, joint work of prosecutors and then-judge Moro to convict the former president before he could run in the last presidential elections; Moro would later become Jair Bolsonaro's first Minister of Justice.
A recently published book, “ Welcome to Lawfare ” by Capital Intelectual, written by Eugenio Zaffaroni, Cristina Caamaño and Valeria Vegh Weis, features a prologue by the former Brazilian president.
